When will the Columbus Day sales start and finish, and are they worth it?

This year, the Columbus Day sales will likely start on October 4th, running through the day itself on October 11th, with many of the best deals coming online later in the Columbus Day weekend.

While it’s unlikely that the Columbus Day sales will have quite the same level of killer deals as those coming up on Black Friday, that doesn’t mean you should skip them. In fact, as Ray Wimer, a professor of retail practice points out, Columbus Day is usually when retailers sell off the last of their summer stock for low prices before bringing in new gear for Black Friday – that makes it the perfect opportunity to pick up the summer items you wanted this year but thought were a bit too pricey.

What should I buy in the 2021 Columbus Day sales?

The Columbus Day TV sales: where to shop and what to buy

TV manufacturers and tech companies more generally usually bring out their biggest new lines and products just before Black Friday and Christmas. That means that just before that – during Columbus Day weekend – they want to offload all their new, but slightly older stock at bargain prices. That means it’s a great time to pick up a TV. Previous Columbus Day sales have included discounts as big as $300 off 4K TVs at Walmart, with Samsung offering a similar amount off their 4k range.

The Columbus Day appliance sales: where to shop and what to buy

Columbus Day is also a good time to stock up on households appliances, which tend to be in larger supply than in other big sales. So, if you’re looking for anything from a new hand mixer to a new oven, the Columbus Day appliance sales should have what you need. Last year, the stores to look out for on Columbus Day were Home Depot, where there was 35% off select appliances, and Bed Bath and Beyond, who slashed $100 off new KitchenAid stand mixers!

The Columbus Day furniture and mattress sales: where to shop and what to buy

Furniture stores love taking advantage of holidays like Columbus Day to have a big sale. And Columbus Day is no exception, with all the big names – Ashley Furniture, JCPenney and Overstock – slashing prices! In 2020, Ashley Furniture took 30% off site-wide, while JCPenney took 60% off every order over $100. Columbus Day coincides with Overstock’s anniversary, which is always a big deal, with up to 70% off site-wide in last year’s Overstock Columbus Day/Anniversary sale.

The Columbus Day mattress sales are also a bit of a usual suspects line up! Ashley Furniture get involved, for one, with deals including offers as shocking as Queen-sized mattresses for just $200. JCPenney also makes sure to get in on the action, with last year’s sale offering 60% off, with another 10% added for mattresses specifically. Home Depot is the only real surprise here, but their offers are well worth looking into – in 2020 they took between 30% and 35% off their mattress range.
